![]() Dear Band Directors, Educators, Parents and Community Members: Please join us for the 34th Annual Campana Jazz Festival on Saturday, February 14, 2009 at Amador Valley High School in Pleasanton. Named in honor of Mr. Jim Campana, AVHS Music Director from 1959 through 1979, the Campana Jazz Festival is one of the highlights of the Pleasanton Unified School District’s musical year. In 2008, the Festival brought together nearly 800 students, 45 ensembles, and 25 schools from the Bay Area and beyond. In addition to great venues, CD recordings and master clinics, over $7000 in summer camp scholarships were awarded to outstanding musicians at two celebratory Awards Concerts. Jazz Vocal Competition Added in 2009 In 2009, we will continue our expanded big band divisions: High School AA, A and B, and Middle School. There will be a competitive division for High School Combos, and due to the enthusiastic response to the 2008 Jazz Vocal Exhibition, we are adding Jazz Vocal in 2009 as a fully competitive division. Master Classes and Instrumental Classes Our Adjudicators, who are some of the most respected jazz educators and musicians from the region, double as instructors in Master Classes for Campana participants. Topics may include Improvisation, Arranging and Composing and Instrumental Techniques. Classes are open to all participating students and directors. Plan for a Full Day and Two Award Concerts The festival is held on the Amador Valley High School Campus, and the first bands of the day will kick-off at 8:00 am. With our expanded schedule, the Campana Festival will be full of music to hear and play. Audience members are encouraged to spend the day attending the performances as each band presents their best charts to a panel of judges. All participants are welcome to listen at every venue. Outstanding Musicians, Best Sections and Best Bands will be recognized at two Awards Concerts. The times and divisions assigned to each of the Award Concerts will be determined by the final schedule and announced as soon as possible. (For planning purposes, the Awards Concerts will be no earlier than 4:00 pm and end no later than 8:00 pm.) The Awards concerts will also feature the winning bands, as well as middle and high school bands from the Pleasanton Unified School District. Apply Now for Campana 2009 The 2008 Festival was a sell-out, and already, we have filled more than half of our 2009 schedule with returning ensembles. Don’t miss out on your opportunity to participate in a growing Jazz Festival where education comes first. Download The 2009 Campana Jazz Festival Application. The deadline for application is December 15, 2008. Priority will be given to 2008 participants who apply with a September 2008 postmark. All others will be confirmed based upon postmark date and availability per division. Please be sure to send payment with your application. An incomplete application or non-payment will delay your entry into the festival. Thank you for supporting Music Education! The Festival is a collaboration of the efforts of many members of our community: the AVHS Music Department, the Amador Friends of Music, parent and student volunteers, respected regional music educators, local and regional businesses and music camps, and the continuous and enthusiastic support of our school administration and civic leaders. Jazz education is alive and well due to the continued encouragement and cooperation of our great community. We look forward to your attendance in 2009! Hold the date – Saturday, February 14, 2009 – and join us at the 34th Annual Campana Jazz Festival. Sincerely,
